Blue birds of happiness...............

I was in line at the Volunteers of America a long while back with a cart-load full of treasures and general awesomeness. LUBS me some great repurposing/reusing/saving cash deals! I was in that place for HOURS with my eldest daughter that day.

We tend to make a totally fun day of it when we do thrifting........lunch/then thrift shop-till-we-drop then meet off in a corner of the place(s) to show off our terrific finds. Well, this particular day was an unusually exhausting one for me, and my daughter was simply taking  too long a while to finish up, so I decided to just get in line without her to speed things along towards my sitting and resting. The line was extraordinarily LONG. I just couldn't understand why it was so long. We do this enough to get the feel for it and this was stupid long. I think I made myself clear, haha.

They have displays at the end of the cashiers stations there- usually the "better" treasures - probably so the cashiers and managers can keep an eye on them- not quite the "glass case" stuff, but not the "oh well, too bad it broke" shelves either.........so I was looking at an adorable set of vintage salt and pepper shakers, saw the price and quickly put them down. Cute is cute, need is need and they weren't cute enough to need them that badly. Even for VoA prices I was kinda surprised. I am whatcha call cheap frugal.  (Insert nervous giggle here.)

My darling daughter finished up and got behind me, ready to check out too, and whuile we were waiting I had time to show her the cute S and P shakers I found and adored. Showed her the price, too. She understood all too well my need to not need then. Got up to the lady in line and started chatting away with her about how busy the place was and how long the line was, etc, blah blah blah and she said it was due to their special half off sale. In further inquiring I found out that it included those adorable S and P shakers! YAY!! The elation! The joy!  Pure thrifting heaven!

  11. I spied one of these at my mother's house (she is 91 yrs old). She told me it was a treasured item of HER mothers. I asked her if I could have it and she said yes. When I got home I noticed there was a wad of what looked like tissue inside. I pulled it out and found another wad of very old wool batting and inside was a broke fragrance disc. Upon further inspection this bird had holes on both sides and on behind the neck. Very unusual for a salt or pepper shaker. So I did some research and found out that this was actually a fragrance holder or pomander. I found the remnants of the silk hanging ribbon inside. Obviously someone cut it off and the knotted end just fell inside. This bird has to be pretty old. I will treasure my little "Bluebird of Happiness" and pass it on to my granddaughter some day.
